Jean Couick McWhorter, 91, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Atrium health-Union. She was born March 14, 1932 at the home of her parents Aubrey David Couick and Maude Flowe Couick in Monroe NC. The middle child of 9. Born feet first and never stopped running.She was married to the love of her life, Donald Smith McWhorter for 53 years until his death in 2008. If you walked in her door, you were immediately offered something to eat. She always had homemade chicken salad and pimento cheese in her refrigerator. She always had cookies, cakes, brownies or some kind of sweets homemade on the counter. She loved her flowers and working in her garden. Her family was her world and she was theirs. She always made everyone’s favorite dessert for their birthday. Her great-grands knew there was always their favorite ice cream in the freezer.Graduated Jackson school in 1950. 13 students, 7 girls, 6 boys. Went to work at JJ Newberries in Monroe, In 1954, went to work for Springs customer service center and retired after 45 years. Lifetime member at Unity ARP church. Taught Nursery Sunday school for several generations. She loved her nursery children. Affectionately known as Miss Jean or Jean Jean. She was the church custodian for 33 years. Preceded in death by her brothers, Harley Couick, Ney Couick and Harold Couick. And sisters, Bertha Price and Ruby Simpson. And special great,great-nephew Campbell Couick and great-nephew Seth Muennich.She is survived by her two daughters, Wanda Ingram (Ronnie) and Angie Matthews (Pat Lee) all of Lancaster SC. Her grandsons, Brett Ingram (Missy) of Waxhaw, NC and Ryan Ingram (Kacie) of Lancaster, SC. Her great-grandchildren, James, Ellie, Logan and Emma. Sisters, Catherine Cannon of Marshville, NC; Helen McAteer (Bill) of Monroe, NC; Doris Mungo (George B) of Lancaster and special sisters-in-law Caroleene Couick of Monroe, NC and Mary Couick of York, SC. Countless nephews and nieces. Many extended family and friends as she was the hub for so many activities.The family would like to thank Dr. Vieau, Dr. Krishon and Dr. Badalyn and their wonderful staff for the attention and care given to her. Also, the progressive care staff at Atrium Union Monroe for their compassionate care. Much thanks and appreciation for her devoted mail carrier, Terry.A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. McWhorter will be held Friday, February 2, 2024 at 1 p.m. at Unity ARP Church with the Rev. Charles Hammond officiating. Burial will be in the Unity ARP Church Cemetery.
